The claims process of the Small Claims Court (District Court) is specifically designed so that you do not need to hire a solicitor or lawyer.

You can use this document to make an application to the Small Claims Registrar at the District Court to recover money you are claiming is owed to you for:

• faulty goods which you bought
• inadequate services provided to you
• minor damage to property
• the non-return of a rent deposit on certain kinds of rented properties.

There is a limit of up to €2,000 on the amount that can be claimed under this procedure in the District Court. A copy of the completed application form will be sent by the Registrar to the person or business against whom you are making the claim, called the respondent, seeking payment of the amount owed. If the respondent refuses to pay the case can then be taken to the District Court by the Registrar for judgment.
